Grant-recipient-announcement-days are always some of my favorite days. Today is right up there - we just released the list of 2009 HP Innovations in Education grant recipients in the US that will receive a total of ~$9M in equipment, cash, and professional services. I am VERY excited about the 35 projects we are funding - and this is just the beginning……(read more)

So, what's missing today? Many things, especially as we look towards the approaching clouds. I have been editing this entry for a while now, but an article came up this week that made me reference it over some of my own thoughts, as it nicely aligns…(read more)

With all the hyper-growth in virtual computing you expect a level of competition between the vendors, but be aware of the trade-offs you make when choosing one vendor over another. Is VMWare truly ahead of the crowd with their vSphere offering, or in…(read more)

During last week’s European SME Week, JA-YE (Junior Achievement Young Enterprise) and the European Commission launched the education campaign ’Your World – Your Buiness’ to inspire school students across Europe to become responsible entrepreneurs. “If you want to save the world, become an entrepreneur”, was how Tom Dodd from DG Enterprise summarised the mission of the campaign during a press conference. ’Entrepreneurs are the world´s change makers. They are responsible for innovations. And they need to take more responsibility in society”.
It’s easy to say, but how do we attract more youngsters to pursue social and environmental business ideas? Well, we probably need to start pretty early to shape the attitudes of the next generation of business people, which leads us to focus on schools. This is why DG Enterprise is collaborating in this campaign with JA-YE – the largest student network organisation in Europe, to address entrepreneurialism in schools. […]

As one of the photographers/printmakers who played a role in the development of the HP Artist Software Solution for Nikon, I receive a steady stream of questions about digital fine art reproduction. Some people ask about the type of technical equipment and photographic proficiency required. Others are more concerned about the feasibility of getting into digital fine-art reproduction as a business. All of these questions are valid, and I will address many of them on a new post on this blog next week.
But if you’re seriously interested in entering the digital fine-art reproduction business, I would encourage you to attend one of the seminars I will be presenting in the New York and Washington, DC area in early June.
You may be surprised to see how much things have changed. A few years ago, the level of financial investment and technical skill required for digital fine-art reproduction […]

I've owned my own business. I've helped launch and manage two successful dot-coms (Netflix and CNET).
And I currently work for HP (which is ranked
#9 in the most recent Fortune 500
listing). So I've seen my share of marketing and brand-building efforts - both
good and bad.
Here's one marketing secret I want
to share: You don't need a dime in your marketing budget to successfully launch
and build your brand. You simply need the right resources, a bit of time, and
the commitment to learn, improve, and share.
Free DIY Marketing Resources
The adoption and acceptance of
social media is very good news for small business owners. The quality of
marketing expertise that's available via blogs, communities and online
conversations is staggering and could cost you thousands of dollars were you to
actually pay for it out of pocket (I did when I had a business). But why would you, if you can get the same
expertise for free (or at […]

What has black cardboard on the inside, a silver foil-covered outer box and can boil 10 litres of water in two hours, using only the sun’s rays? Right, it’s a solar cooker and a special one at that.
The Kyoto Box solar cooker by John Brohmer won the Climate Change Challenge which was sponsored by HP and organised by the Financial Times and Forum for the Future, a sustainable development charity. Among the judges were Mark Hurd, CEO, HP; Sir Richard Branson and Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the IPCC and a Nobel Prize winner, who chose the winner in conjunction with a public vote. The latter helped the Kyoto Box beat the nearly other 300 entries to the climate change challenge. You can read more about other shortlisted entries here.
I’m glad to see the prize ($75,000) go to the Kyoto box. While solar cookers have been around for […]

12 Global Brands Come Together for a User-Generated Advertising Contest
Mofilm (www.mofilm.com) is spearheading an effort across 12 global brands to give consumers around the world the opportunity to create and share their voices on one or more of the participating brands. The contest is being held in conjunction with the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival in June and the Mofilm event is being hosted by Spike Lee.
This is the first time a user-generated advertising event of of this scale and collaboration has been attempted. The brands are all chartered to reach out to their own customers, brand enthusiasts, and networks thereby delivering against the contest theme of “You to the Power of 12 - U12” If successful, this contest could contribute to another change in the face of media in terms of how advertising content is created and obtained. Will it obsolete existing ad creative and production services? […]

I would quickly like to draw your attention to this year’s European Small and Medium Entrepreneurship Week in Brussels which is taking place now up until 14 May. During the European SME week there will be over 1000 events in over 35 countries. You cannot miss it.
My colleague Jeannette Weisschuh was attending one of the events yesterday: the launch of the initiative ’Your World, Your Business’. This initiative was developed by the European Commission and Junior Achievement Young Enterprise (JA-YE) Europe to encourage young people to become creative, dynamic and responsible entrepreneurs of the future. You can find additional information on ’Your World, Your Business’ here.
Students participating in the ’Your World, Your Business’ campaign are asked to submit their ideas to the JA-YE Europe and HP ’Responsible Business Competition ’. Through this competition we want to encourage young people to consider social and environmental responsibility as they build […]

Allow me to point you to a recent HP video profile story produced by ZDNet.
The video summarises our green practices and technologies and includes interviews with Bonnie Nixon, our Director of Environmental Sustainability and Brian Brouillette, our Vice President of Solutions Infrastructure. The video provides a nice overview of how we at HP strive to reduce the carbon footprint of our company. Definitely worth watching. You can watch the video here.
Enjoy
