2008 – strong partnerships are a key success factor

Wow, time goes by quickly! As I look back on an exciting year, I would like to review some highlights of CSR at HP EMEA and I would also be keen to hear about your 2008 highlights. I think we can be particularly proud of what we have achieved with our partners in the areas of education and environment this year.
We have worked with WWF for more than a year now to investigate how information and communication technology (ICT) can help to combat climate change. This summer we published the ‘Low Carbon IT Solutions’ guide which summarises how carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can be reduced by using HP products.
A second environmental highlight is our e-waste project in Africa. ICT products can help to reduce carbon emissions but, at the end of their lifecycle, reuse or recycling is a critical factor in reducing the environmental burden. During the year […]

Computational Photography in the Mainstream

By Wayne Cosshall
Computational photography is what you get when you combine the capabilities of a camera, computer, appropriate software, and a modified photographic workflow and the result is much greater than the sum of the parts. I first wrote about computational photography on this blog back in November 2007. It has been one of my most read posts. A year later seems a good time to revisit this important topic.
For those new to it, computational photography is what you get by combining very smart software on your computer with your camera images and a modified workflow that understands the needs of the software. The two most widely used areas of computational photography are panoramas and high dynamic range imaging, or HDRi. But it is not limited to that.
Because there is readily available software to do it, computational photography actually encompasses the following areas:·         Panorama stitching and exposure balancing by blending multiple […]

A Fine Balance 2008: Privacy Technologies in Action

On November, 27th I attended the UK "A Fine Balance 2008: Privacy Technologies in Action" event. It provided different and interesting perspectives (from the technological, social and legislative angles) on privacy. Presentations are soon going to be made available online:
"Following the success of the 2006 and 2007 Fine Balance events, four of the government's Knowledge Transfer Networks present the third in this series of independent forums that are already helping industry, government and academia achieve a balance between ensuring privacy and enjoying the benefits of new technology. How to implement ITILv3?

With which process do I start and what sequence should I follow? These are probably questions that are asked most often, especially in greenfield situations (mmm…does that still exist?) and by people that are relatively new to ITILv3.  As a matter of fact I am regularly asked to provide input and feedback on project definitions and plans that are focused on "implementing ITILv3 processes".
Let me start by stating that implementing ITILv3 should never be the goal in and by itself, but is always a MEANS to control & manage the resources, capabilities and output (read: services) of an IT organization (read: service provider). In addition ITIL v3 is a best practice framework and not a cookbook. So it will tell you that you need an incident management process and describe some characteristics, however it will not provide you with all the details (such as e.g. training and tool settings) that are needed to have IT staff work with specific incident […]

Economic slow down and CSR

Looking at the current economic slow down and the prospects for 2009, you might ask yourself: “What does this mean for CSR strategies and related programmes?”
Even if the business outlook is not promising at the moment and resource situations seem to be pretty tough, there is a strong likelihood that companies with solid CSR strategies will come through the economic crisis on a sound footing and that they might even be able to  demonstrate clearly the strong contributions that CSR practices have made and can make to business success.
I found a very interesting video message on this from Stephen Howard from Business in the Community http://vcr.csrwire.com/node/12017. It is in tough economic conditions that businesses look even harder for ways to differentiate themselves from their competitors and to become more attractive to customers and talented employees. In a global consumer study, customers expressed clearly what their expectations are.
If companies want […]

Achieving Business Success for our Enterprise Customers

Mike Feldman  Vice President and General Manager Enterprise Sales and
Services IPG-Americas

ImagePrint 2008
I’m happy to report that ImagePrint 2008 was a tremendous success.  This
year, we had a record number of enterprise customers and channel and solution
partners in attendance.  Not only was it a great turnout, but everything from
the breakout sessions to the keynotes to the solutions showcase were first-rate
and we received extremely positive feedback from our customers and partners
alike.   I have the privilege to work with many smart and talented people at HP
and really saw my team engaging at all levels.
At every turn I was hearing from customers that this event made a difference
and that they are going to take immediate action on building their Print 2.0 plans,
which allow them to save money and improve their business processes just by
assessing their imaging and printing environment.  For those already down the
path of optimizing
their infrastructure and/or managing
their environments, they wanted to extend […]

Giving Back to Those Who Give to Us

By Jon Canfield
Most of us are incredibly lucky. We spend our time doing something we love, whether it’s our profession or a passion. Clearly, we’re in the minority when it comes to this type of lifestyle, and it had me wondering how I could share my good fortune with others who aren’t so lucky. One way to do this is to donate time to shoot portraits for families that might not otherwise be able to afford them. Especially now with the economy so unsettled, portraits are something that many people may forgo.
Now I could spend full days doing free portrait work, so it was obvious that I needed to focus on some area that would be meaningful and somewhat controlled. So, I decided that this year I would provide portraits for military families separated by war or assignment.
I’m doing a free session and providing two 5 x 7 and four wallet-size images […]

Entering Print Competitions Part 1: Choosing the Right Images

By David Saffir

Entering a print competition can be one of the best ways to become a better photographer. Although winning awards and getting publicity can be gratifying, you don’t have to win the competition in order to benefit from it.
For example, here are just two of the valuable opportunities that entering a print competition can provide
·         In a formal setting, you can see what many other photographers consider to be their best work.  ·         You can have your work evaluated and scored by a panel of judges. In some competitions, the judges will have microphones so you can hear their comments. ·         The process of choosing which images to enter forces you to look more critically at your work. As you attempt to evaluate your work from the eyes of the judges, you will start to see each image in a whole new light.
Competitions are usually divided into categories. This […]
